I've had quite a few internet blogs in my past. Rarely do they last, and rarely am I satisfied with them, but I thought I'd give it another try. Seeing as it's summer and I have freetime and I'm bored, usw.
Tonight, I'm hoping to read some Crime and Punishment. Over spring break this past year, a few friends of mine and I were sitting in many different bagel shops. And in more than one bagel shop the name Dostoyevsky came up. They had all read him and enjoyed him, and it made me feel like an uncultured swine not having done so myself. In fact, most of what I read makes me feel like an uncultured swine. So, I've decided to change something about that.
Perhaps, I'll actually like it, too. That's my greatest hope really-that I'll enjoy being cultured. That it won't be something I have to put on, but rather that I'll actually become a genuinely intelligent, worthwhile person.
I don't think books alone can do that. Even Dostoyevsky. But it's a start. And maybe, to myself, I'll never be cultured enough. I'll never be good enough. But it's a start.
